Summer Missionary 2023

Wesley Hughes

Where do you currently attend school? Missouri Valley College in Marshall, MO
Where are you serving this summer, and who is your mentor?
Redemption Ranch with Jason Zellmer
How did you first encounter Jesus Christ, and how has His lordship continued to change your life?
I was introduced at a young age. My family has gone to church pretty much whole life. We moved to Kansas City for my dad’s schooling to become a pastor. We started going to church at Nashua Baptist. Naturally, since my dad was studying Biblical studies, I started asking questions about God. Our pastor and my dad sat me down one day and explained it in simplistic terms for me. I personally accepted Jesus a couple weeks later in my bedroom.
What does the church mean to you?
The church’s meaning to me is a loving, caring, joyous, accepting family. I love being able to church and be able to be me, to not be embarrassed to let emotions out, or show that I’m struggling, or even show that I’m personally in a good place in my life. I also love being able to have accountability partners and people to keep me grounded and that won’t sugarcoat anything for me.
As a student, how have you shared – and are currently sharing – your faith with others?
Currently, I’m attending a small group Bible study with a group of 7-10 teammates of mine every Tuesday night. It’s a great way to come and be heard on anything, open up Gods word and talk about what it means to each of us. We are constantly inviting people to come and just try it out.
What do you feel is your vocational call (future career), and how do you anticipate sharing your faith through that call?
As of right now, I feel my calling is into the education system and coaching. I think it’s a great way to build relationships and be able to share God’s Word with my students and athletes. I also think it’s a good way to lead by example and show my students and athletes what it looks like to a child of God.
Why do you want to be a summer missionary?
My biggest reason for wanting to be involved in the summer missionary camp is because I have never truly attended a summer camp. I’ve been there throughout the week because of my parents helping out, but I have never been enrolled. I also knew almost all the counselors and leaders and after talking to them when camp ends they have a fire and joy that is unmatched. I also love kids and helping teach them about the Word of God.
