Summer Missionary 2023

Peyton Kirby

Where do you currently attend school? University of Missouri in Columbia (Mizzou)
Where are you serving this summer, and who is your mentor?
First Baptist Church of Festus in Crystal City with Caleb Heitman
How did you first encounter Jesus Christ, and how has His lordship continued to change your life?
My initial encounter with Jesus Christ was at a very young age. I had grown up in church and had decided that I wanted to make Him Lord of my life. However, it wasn’t until high school that I realized what it truly meant to follow Him. I realized that just believing that He is real isn’t actually what it means to follow Jesus. In order to follow Him, I needed to love Him enough to obey His Word. I went from just knowing that He is Lord to developing a relationship with Him.
What does the church mean to you?
The church means a group of followers of Christ that love and support each other but also hold each other accountable for their actions. Everyone works together to glorify Christ.
As a student, how have you shared – and are currently sharing – your faith with others?
As a student I have shared my faith with others through mission work. Most of this work serves other people and by helping them and telling them about Jesus. A weakness of mine is public speaking, so I would rather show people the love of Jesus through acts of service. For example, I have done projects for people in a neighborhood like building a bus stop and painting houses. The weakness to this however is that even though you try to tell them about Him, sometimes people thank you but completely miss the point which was to share the love of Jesus. In the future I would like to learn how to effectively share the Gospel with others.
What do you feel is your vocational call (future career), and how do you anticipate sharing your faith through that call?
I feel that my vocational call is computer programming. It is something that I feel I am gifted at and do not want to waste this gift. I am not sure how God is going to use me to show others His glory yet but through Him all things are possible.
Why do you want to be a summer missionary?
Missions are a way to share the gospel and the love of Christ with others. I want to be a summer missionary in order to share Jesus with others and to grow my faith. I also want to take this opportunity to learn how to better share the gospel from other followers of Christ.
