Summer Missionary 2023

Paul Nelson

Where do you currently attend school? Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville
Where are you serving this summer, and who is your mentor?
The Lighthouse at Northwest Missouri State University with Jason Yarnell
How did you first encounter Jesus Christ, and how has His lordship continued to change your life?
I accepted Jesus Christ into my heart on November 30th, 2014. And it was a day that I will never forget, because on that day I asked the Lord to take my mind, body and soul for His purpose. So that I might be His devoted servant in my future. Since that day I have been very fortunate to be given many opportunities to be a witness of His unrelenting love, a love that has had such a profound impact on me that His will be done allows me to into the ministry.
What does the church mean to you?
Throughout my life the Church has meant many things to me, a home, a resource and a family. But as I got older I found myself becoming more and more involved until now as I attend Northwest Missouri State, it as become the primary focal point of my career.
As a student, how have you shared – and are currently sharing – your faith with others?
The good Lord has truly blessed me with many opportunity’s to share my faith especially with my fellow peers here at college and beyond. Such examples include working with the Lighthouses leadership and Evangelist team, also working with other Christian groups around the area as well as volunteering for events with the First Baptist Church of Maryville.
What do you feel is your vocational call (future career), and how do you anticipate sharing your faith through that call?
After I have graduated from Northwest Missouri State University with my Bachelors degree and a major in History, I plan to attend Midwestern Baptist Seminary to earn my Masters of Divinity. Following this I plan to continue my career in the United States Army as a Chaplain, eventually retiring and planting a Church somewhere in the United States.
Why do you want to be a summer missionary?
Missions to me is one of the most crucial elements in our faith. Jesus himself calls us to “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit” Matt 28:19. And it is that command that guides my thinking in every aspect of my life. That unexplainable urge to go and be a witness of Christ is what drives me to be a missionary this summer.
