Summer Missionary 2023

Madelyn Karst

Where do you currently attend school? Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City
Where are you serving this summer, and who is your mentor?
Refuge KC in Kansas City with Carson Myers (Central Baptist Church)
How did you first encounter Jesus Christ, and how has His lordship continued to change your life?
I was saved when I was twelve. I had gone through a really dark time and just didn’t feel like my life had any worth or meaning. My mom gave me some Christian books, and they explained the gospel in a way that I hadn’t ever heard before. I felt comforted, loved, and held by Jesus. I didn’t have a complete understanding of the gospel at that point, but I knew enough to know that I needed Jesus to save me from my sin. I have understood more and grown so much since then, and I am so thankful that I can be a His child.
What does the church mean to you?
The church is almost essential for a Christian. It is a place for growth, community, and safety. It allows the Christian a place to worship our Lord and Savior with other believers. So much of the life of a Christian should be inside of the church.
As a student, how have you shared – and are currently sharing – your faith with others?
I currently lead a weekly evangelism group to go door-to-door to share the gospel with as many people as possible. I also seek to share with someone in my life—be it a friend or a cashier at Walmart—at least once a week. I have shared with others that I met at places like parks and coffee shops before as well.
What do you feel is your vocational call (future career), and how do you anticipate sharing your faith through that call?
I would love to be in long term missions. I so desperately want to help reach the unreached people groups in the world and I would love to be able to do that someday.
Why do you want to be a summer missionary?
I want to be a summer missionary because my life is not my own. I am not living for myself; I am living so that my life may glorify Christ and others may hear and live. I believe that is what missions are. Sharing the gospel so that others may hear and live.
